June 2008        The Little Things  by Kennette Reed
We all have big things in our life that require our attention. Paying the rent/mortgage, employment, transportation to our employment, family (in the largest sense of the word), safety, and many more major considerations. Too often, we focus on the big things and lose sight of the little things.
Each morning is a gift. Yet most of us don't express our daily thanks for the opportunity to experience it. Connecting with someone who actually likes us for who we are, is also a wonderful gift. How often do we show our appreciation for that person's acceptance? Every client interaction provides another chance to cultivate both a business and personal relationship. When did you last inquire about their son or daughter's soccer game?
In life, the big things matter, but the little things matter even more. For it's the little things that add up and become the big things. The great pyramids were not dropped from the heavens. They were built stone by stone. The end result became a "wonder of the world".
Below are some little things to consider:
  • There is much in the world to be concerned about. However, trying to figure out how to fix "the world" can put anyone into overwhelm. Instead, ask what you can do in your own life, family, or community. Big fixes start with little fixes, and little steps of progress.
  • Show appreciation for the small accomplishments of your loved ones, friends, or colleagues. The simple act of showing you noticed and appreciate their effort means a great deal.
  • Ask someone how they are doing, and actually stop to listen to their response. We often ask the question, but appear to not be interested in the answer. Take the time to listen.
  • Send a "Thank You" card to a loved one, friend, or colleague. Thank them for being a friend, helping on a project, or just say how much you appreciate them for who they are, or what they bring to your life.
The little things can brighten a dreary day, turn a frown into laughter, guide a lost spirit, or mend a broken heart. To begin, it only takes a few words, a little time, a couple of steps, or one stone. The result could be the wonder of someone's world. Each little thing contributes to our big world. What little things will you do today?
